The View on Miss Colorado's Monologue
Hello fellow blog readers!
Did you hear what the women of "The View" had to say about Miss Colorado's monologue?
If you didn't know Miss Colorado, Kelley Johnson, prepared a monologue for the talent portion of this year's Miss America Pageant. She spoke about her time as a nurse, specifically the man who reminded her why she became a nurse.
If you haven't seen the monologue here it is:
Miss Colorado's monologue was received with a lot of praise and people claimed it to be moving and inspirational. She inspired many people and her words only encouraged future nurses to keep studying. With all this praise and love she was receiving, it was quite a shock to hear the hosts of "The View" bash on her in such a demeaning and rude way. She "basically read her emails out loud," said Michelle Collins. "Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope?" questioned Joy Behar.
I don't know if these women were looking for people to agree, or they wanted to make a joke out of it, either way it proved fruitless. Since the comments on "The View" hashtags like #NursesUnite, #NursesMatter and #NotJustANurse have begun trending. These hashtags show support, not just from nurses who were happy to explain to Joy Behar that stethoscope can and is used by both the doctors and nurses, but also by decent human beings who support a profession for what's it worth.

Personally, that's what bothered me most about the comments on the View. They were not valuing the profession nor the talent, because I would also like to point out that they dismissed the monologue as a talent. "I was like...that's not a real talent," said Collins. Could she have been referring to this monologue in specific? Possibly, but regardless she dismisses Miss Colorado's profession and her talent to speak about it.
This truly gets to me because as a person, as a human being who recognizes someone else hard work I think you should never dismiss anyone's profession, or belittle what someone does. Just because you don't understand it, or perhaps in your eyes something else has greater value, does not give you the right to speak out it disrespectfully.
My major is photojournalism--nothing medical at all, but I always get asked questions or am given assumptions about what my career will be like. And the thing is, most of the people who make comments like "but that's a hobby" or "do you have any connections? If you have connections I'll be shut up," are not necessary. If this is something I want to do with my life respect it, even if you don't agree. And if you don't know or understand--ask me about it. Don't tell me it's wrong.
So women of "The View" if you don't know what it means to be a nurse. Don't criticize it. From one human being to another--respect each other.
Okie doke folkies, until the next post!
